THE DRIVE HOME WAS excruciating. The passenger jerked every time a car came past in the opposite direction, though to be fair, he was still trying to come to terms with us driving on the left hand side of the road.

And why do people seem to think they need their fog lights on when there is no fog? For reasons unknown to the rest of mankind, some Scottish drivers think it makes their car look cool or something. I just think it makes them look as stupid as a Christmas tree in October.

When the sign for Strathdougall came into view, I heaved a sigh of relief. I was off kilter. I had snogged Cole in public, fallen in the sea, driven my car knickerless and yet still wanted to jump my boss. I needed a cold shower, a long walk with Molly and my bed—alone.

Molly welcomed us. We put away the perishable and frozen groceries quickly and I grabbed Molly’s lead.

“Where are you going?” asked Cole, coming out of the kitchen.

“Molly needs a walk. She’s been in all day.”

“I’ll come with you.”

I shook my head. I didn’t want him to come with me. I needed some space from his charm and his sexiness. “I’m fine.” I looked down at Molly who was standing at the door looking expectantly up at me.

“You can’t go walking at night on your own. You need a man to protect you.”

I snorted out a laugh. “Really Cole. I’ve been walking dogs around Strathdougall at night since I was in my teens and I’ve never been set upon by thieves, vagabonds or rapists yet.”

“Yeah well, there’s a first time for everything. I’m coming with you.”

I sighed my consent. This was not a fight I cared to continue. Besides, I was more concerned about what would happen inside the cottage with Cole than outside the cottage with anyone else.

I said nothing as he trailed me from the cottage. I ignored him when he muttered that he thought Molly should be on her lead. She was my dog and she walked off her lead most of the time. She was a good dog. When we got to the park area I stopped and watched as she went for a run around.

“Why are you pissed with me?” Cole said suddenly.

“I’m just tired.”

“You’ve been pissed with me since I kissed you in the parking lot at the grocery store.”

“It’s a car park and a supermarket,” I corrected.

“Stop being a fuckin’ pedant, Rhona. You know fine what I mean.”

I stopped walking and turned to stare at him. I didn’t think he had sworn once since arriving here. He must be annoyed. But even the way he drawled the F word sounded sexy.

“Don’t swear at me. Is that how you speak to all your staff?”

“You can be really fucking irritating, Rhona.” There it was again.

“And you...you can be...”

His phone rang. He pulled it out his pocket and scowled at it. Sighing, he answered it.

“Yeah. Hi. Yeah, Cherie. No, I hadn’t forgotten. I told you I had to come to Scotland.
